“The words are a cry against order, against knowing too much, and against “deciding” that the imaginative is not real and that art is merely a craft of building. They are a cry against the death of wonder, both in reading and in writing; they buck the trend represented by the midcentury mindset where the precision of Hemingway ruled and writings of that new type of “literary criticism” that had to be about things, about “texts” and not about people” (Barlow, 107).
“The golden age of science fiction is twelve” (Graham).
Science fiction is simultaneously an escape from reality, while remaining a “way of looking ahead to see what’s behind” (Barlow, 110). It is the blending of science (reality) and fiction (imagination). Aaron Barlow chooses to highlight this binary that is endemic to the genre by defining realism as “the opposite of the imaginative” (105). He goes on to claim that Bradbury was the product of an era which was destroying the hope and romance of the past, and replacing it with “[m]odernism, with its straight lines and determined visions” (110). In doing so, he intentionally sets up Bradbury as the savior of imagination and wonder, while condemning the New Critics as the harbingers of a mechanistic and sterile literary criticism. These New Critics are the propagators of “The Intentional Fallacy”, a line of thinking which Barlow maintains we cannot possibly extend to understanding Bradbury; in fact, he claims that to attempt to do so would be to completely miss what Bradbury was attempting to do in the first place.
In your essay, please define “imagination” and its purpose in our lives; you may use both Aaron Barlow’s essay and The Martian Chronicles. But as you are working, consider the limits of imagination; both in making sense of texts and movies, and our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.
