Unit: The Political System
This week’s topic is the 87th Legislative Session. You have two choices:
Choice 1: Demographics. Talk about the make up of the 87th Legislative Body. Be sure to cover all demographics (and compare them to the demographics of the people in Texas). The talk about how the demographics will likely affect the types of legislation that will make it to the floor for a vote. Political affiliation is not a demographic. ENGAGE! Be sure to explain whether demographics plays a part in legislating. Also, provide examples of legislation that is currently being debated.
Choice 2: I want you to investigate and comment on stakeholders. First, talk about some of the legislation being debated in the 87th Legislative Session. Then talk about interest groups that play a part in pushing legislation. Finally, conclude whether you believe certain legislation will pass and who will be the winners and losers of various legislation. Be sure to choose legislation that is interesting to YOU. This will make the research more interesting.
Do not assume your group knows what you are talking about. Provide enough detail to educate your group. Be sure to provide videos, articles and/or other material that you find interesting and informative.
