Assignment 1: RESEARCH ARTICLE REVIEW

Format: 12 point, 1-inch margins, double-spaced

Part I:  Review of Your Research Articles

Please review the two research articles – Pederson & LaBrie (2007) and Borsari et al., (2007) –   and address the following issues.  You must use section headings (A, B, C, D, E, and F).

1 RESEARCH QUESTIONS/HYPOTHESES: Identify the research questions/hypotheses put forth by the author(s). Is the study based on theory or is it atheoretical?  Identify the theory if present.

2 SAMPLE: Identify the author’s population of interest, sample, and sampling procedure.

3 VARIABLES: Discuss how the variables are operationalized and measured.

4 METHODS: Identify the author’s procedures for collecting data.

5 DESIGN: What is the research design used in the study?

6 CONCLUSIONS: Identify the author’s conclusions. Discuss whether the conclusions drawn by the author jump too far from the data and explain why or why not this is so.  Using the threats to the internal and external validity of a study, what problems do you see with the design of this study?

**Please review each article separately and write the reviews in YOUR OWN WORDS (i.e., avoid using quotes from the articles)**

Length: approximately 6 pages (3 pages per article).

Grading (see rubric):

Each article  = 35 points

Total = 70 points

Part II:  A Discussion that Integrates the Findings Across Your Two Research Articles

For the second part of this assignment you should integrate findings across studies:

Section A: Looking across the two studies, identify the strengths and weaknesses of the research in this area.  What might be done to improve future research?

Section B: Based on your reading of these studies, what issues do you think need to be explored in future research?
