Scenario: After the European powers left, African leaders believed democracy threatened to destroy the existing states and would prevent social progress. Therefore, leaders maintained a strong authoritarian control they had learned from the Europeans.

For example, after Ghana won independence, Kwame Nkrumah threw his opponents in jail just like the Europeans did in earlier years. He also outlawed opposition parties, and in time, nearly bankrupted the nation.
