While we will be working with different styles of essays throughout the semester, to get us started, this first one will be what I sometimes call “Standard Academic.” By that I mean that it will be like most essays you have probably been previously taught to write.It should have an introduction that gets your reader’s attention, introduces the story you’re writing about, its author, and also provides a thesis. You can use class Discussions to inform your thesis, or you can come up with your own point.The essay should have body paragraphs that use examples from the text to prove your thesis. We will talk about quoting and citing and essay format in general in the middle of the week.Since these essays are relatively short, they probably don’t need to restate everything in a conclusion since your reader will have just read your point. Rather, try to wrap it up without just repeating yourself.As you make your point, do not summarize the story. Think of it, perhaps, like talking about a movie. In other words, if you and a friend saw a movie together, as you walk out of the theater, you would probably talk about the movie. But imagine if your friend asked you what you thought about the movie…and you summarized it. That would be odd. You both just saw it. You both know what happens in the movie. Your friend is looking for your analysis of it. The same goes for writing about literature. Assume your reader has read the story you are working with, so don’t summarize it.
